Pet Store: Questions to Ask Customers and What to Explain at Pickup

Reliable advice starts with a few details, gathered in the same way every time before choosing an accessory. It is completed at pickup with a practical explanation: what it is for, how to adjust it, how to introduce it, how to clean it, and when to stop using it or come back to the store. Recording measurements and choices makes it possible to give consistent recommendations on future visits.

Before recommending: five things to ask

When recommending accessories in store, ask customers the same questions in the same order:

  1. Animal and measurements. Species, age, weight, and the measurements relevant to that accessory—for example, chest circumference for a harness.
  2. Habits. Does the animal pull on the leash, chew, dig, sleep curled up, or get startled by noises?
  3. Environment and intended use. Apartment, car, garden, and how many hours the animal is left alone.
  4. What has not worked before. Which accessory did the customer use, and why did they stop using it?
  5. Guidance already received. Any advice from a veterinarian or trainer that should be followed.

If the request is prompted by a symptom or a behavior problem (limping, itching, aggression, intense fear), do not make a diagnosis: first direct the customer to a veterinarian or trainer. The accessory comes later, taking their advice into account.

A list to give the customer before the visit

A short note, printed or sent through the channels the store already uses, helps customers arrive prepared:

At pickup: the five-point use guide

Before handing over the accessory, review the use instructions with the customer, either verbally or on a note to include with it:

  1. What it is for and what it does not do. One sentence, including its limitations.
  2. How to adjust or assemble it. Demonstrate it and let the customer try: this way you can see right away whether the steps are clear.
  3. How to introduce it. Gradually and under supervision, without forcing the animal.
  4. Cleaning and maintenance. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.
  5. When to stop using it or come back. Chafing, detached parts, persistent refusal, or malfunctions.

In one line, for four common accessories:

  • Harness: Adjust it and check the fit while the animal is moving, not just standing still.
  • Chew toy: Supervise the first sessions and check regularly for wear.
  • Automatic feeder: Run the first cycle with the customer, weighing the portions dispensed.
  • Pet bed: Wash the cover according to its label.

What not to promise

Avoid “indestructible,” “suitable for everyone,” and any guarantees of health or behavior outcomes: an accessory alone cannot guarantee them. For everything else, refer to the label, the manufacturer's instructions, and professionals (veterinarian, trainer).

Recording measurements and choices in the customer record

To retrieve sizes and preferences without relying on memory, you can use the customer directory in PawsPet Business, the app for business owners, which is separate from PawsPet, the app for pet owners. You need a business-owner profile, which you can create using the guided “Become a business owner” process (it starts automatically the first time you log in, if you do not have one yet): you can choose “Pet store” from the business categories. You can use the customer directory even before completing Stripe payment verification.

To add a customer:

  1. Open “Customers” in the bottom bar and tap the “+” button.
  2. In the “New customer” form, enter the “Name”; “Email” and “Phone” are optional. “Notes” are private: the customer cannot see them.
  3. Check the required box “I confirm that I have informed the customer that their data is being recorded”: make sure you really inform them first.
  4. Tap “Next: add an animal,” fill in the animal’s details, and confirm with “Done.”

For a customer already in the directory, simply open their record and tap “Add animal.”

To record a choice, open the animal from the customer’s record, go to “Health,” and tap the yellow “+” button: the “Record” form opens. Choose the “Note” type: the “Name” field is required (a title such as “Medium harness” is enough), while in “Notes” you can enter the size tried and the chest circumference, with the date; you can add a photo if you like. For weight, tap “+” in “Measurements” and choose the “Weight” type, then enter the value in kg. Entries remain in the animal’s record: notes under “Health,” and weights under “Measurements.”

The customer does not need to be registered with PawsPet: the record is an internal contact in your business management app, and the data stays there until it is linked to a PawsPet account. If you like, you can tap “Invite” in the customer’s record and share a link from your phone to link the record to their PawsPet account. This depends on the customer accepting and on a feature that may not yet be active: when it is, the customer can find the store’s entries in the app and add their own notes, but cannot edit the existing entries.

After the sale: follow-up and the next visit

Ask the customer to come back or contact you right away if anything is wrong: chafing, persistent refusal, or parts coming loose. To check the fit, you can make an appointment in the “Schedule” section of PawsPet Business (tap the “+” button), choose the customer, and enter a custom title such as “Harness fit check.”

At the next visit, reread the notes in the animal’s record, ask how it went, and update the measurements, especially for growing puppies: a size that fits today may no longer fit at the next visit.

Write down the five questions and the use guide on a sheet of paper today, keep it at the counter, and try them with your next customers.
